Biography
Meng Xuenong (born 1949) served as Mayor of Beijing from January to April 2003, a tenure that coincided with the SARS outbreak in Beijing. He was dismissed on 20 April 2003 alongside Health Minister Zhang Wenkang for dereliction of duty in the epidemic response, having served as mayor for only approximately three months; he was one of the most senior local officials held accountable during the SARS crisis. In 2008 he was appointed Governor of Shanxi province, but resigned the same year following a tailings dam collapse at Xiangfen that caused heavy casualties.
