Biography

Jorge Sampaio (1939–2021) was a Portuguese Socialist politician who served as President of Portugal from 1996 to 2006. On 20 December 1999, he represented Portugal at the Macau sovereignty transfer ceremony, witnessing this historical moment alongside Chinese President Jiang Zemin as Portugal's highest representative at the close of its presence in Macau. During his presidency he worked to develop the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) and actively advocated for the cultural rights of the Portuguese-speaking community and the Macanese in post-handover Macau.
