Biography

Rise to Command

Huang Baitao (1900-1948) rose through the Nationalist military without the Whampoa pedigree shared by most senior commanders — a distinction that was said to limit his access to political patronage. He built his reputation through demonstrated battlefield competence during the Second Sino-Japanese War and the early phases of the civil war, earning command of the 7th Army Corps.

Encirclement at Nianzhuang and Death

At the opening of the Huaihai Campaign, Huang Baitao's 7th Army Corps was caught east of Xuzhou near Nianzhuang before it could consolidate with other Nationalist formations. Su Yu's East China Field Army encircled the corps and methodically reduced its perimeter over two weeks. Huang Baitao was killed on 22 November 1948 as the final defensive positions were overrun — the first of the three corps commanders to fall in the campaign.
