  • Scientific Director of China's nuclear weapons programme

Biography

Early Life and Studies Abroad

Deng Jiaxian was born on 25 June 1924 in Huaining, Anhui, into an educated family. He graduated from the physics department of National Southwest Associated University in 1945, went to study in the United States in 1948, and received his doctorate in theoretical physics from Purdue University in 1950. Nine days after receiving his degree, Deng returned to China, declining offers of favourable conditions from the American side — one of the most emblematic figures among the scientists who returned to the new People's Republic in its early years.

Core Contributions to Nuclear Weapons Development

In 1958, Deng Jiaxian was secretly assigned to the nuclear weapons programme, after which he was almost completely cut off from his family for nearly thirty years, his true work kept under strict secrecy. He led the theoretical design of the atomic bomb, solving the critical computational problems of the implosion-type nuclear device; after the Soviet specialists withdrew, he led his team in rebuilding nuclear reaction data by hand calculation, ensuring that development work was not interrupted by the technological blockade. The successful '596' first nuclear test of 1964 and the hydrogen bomb test of 1967 both reflected his core contributions. He also personally attended multiple hazardous test sites to inspect faults, suffering serious long-term damage from nuclear radiation exposure.

Later Years and Historical Assessment

Deng Jiaxian, whose health had been gravely damaged by prolonged nuclear radiation exposure, was diagnosed with rectal cancer in 1985 and died in Beijing on 29 July 1986 at the age of 62. His contributions were not declassified and made public until years after his death. The Chinese government posthumously honoured him as a 'Two Bombs Pioneer,' and he was among the recipients of the Two Bombs, One Satellite Meritorious Medal alongside Qian Xuesen, Yu Min, and others. Deng Jiaxian is well known in Western scholarship through Lewis and Xue Litai's China Builds the Bomb, and is recognised as one of the most important nuclear weapons scientists of the twentieth century.
